Matryoshka Dolls

My parents are constantly traveling around the world and recently my father came back from Russia with gifts! I received a gift of Russian chocolates, tea, coffee and of course… Matryoshka dolls! Matryoshka or Russian Nesting Dolls refer to a set of wooden figures of decreasing size placed one inside the other. They’re beautiful and a fun way to add some color to your home.

Grandma’s House

Lately my Grandma has started giving me and my sister vintage goodies every time we visit.  Most of the items no one else appreciates so it’s great for us! The other day we hit the jackpot! I received a vintage teapot my Grandmother’s friend made in 1957, a milk glass pitcher, a vintage plate another one of my Grandmother’s friends made, and a vintage French glass canister.

The plate is a mosaic with ceramic leaves. Both it and the teapot have gold accents (the plate is gold underneath and the teapot has a gold handle)

The French canister has “Le Parfait” engraved in the glass and the pitcher has images of grapes and fruit. The milk glass belonged to my great-grandmother.

Emily Church

Emily Church is an emerging painter originally from Louisville but now living/working in Brooklyn. I first viewed her work in an exhibition at Galerie Hertz in Louisville, 2010. The exhibition included a series of paintings by Church featuring images from the forests of Slovenia.  I had never been more entranced by paintings of nature before. I love how she complements the lonely landscape with vivid yellows and greens; her use of color and perspective is enchanting. Below are a few images from that series, though the pictures do not do them justice. Each canvas measures 30″x30″ and the large paintings further support the artist’s desire to captivate the viewer.

Derby Headbands

Fly Away Fox now has Derby headbands available for sale at Salvo, in downtown Louisville on East Market St.  I wanted to show my interpretation of the big and bold on Derby by creating headbands with large flowers and birds’ nests. I used vintage and recycled material in natural colors like brown, orange, red, yellow and green.

Hale

HALE is an industrial design company founded by Jonathan Nesci in 2006. It’s a part-design, part-production firm based dually in Chicago, IL and Scottsburg, IN.

HALE uses a direct, intimate approach in securing quality, detailed, decorative art and fine furniture products from craftsmen in fields beyond the furnishing markets. In many cases, the designs are formed around industry capabilities and employ experts in a variety of manufacturing and production processes.
In a relatively short time, HALE has created a wide range of products and has received recognition from leading design publications such as Wallpaper, Dwell, Metropolitan Home, Surface, and Art + Auction. HALE has won the annual Wallpaper Design Award for the “Library Bookcase,” a minimalist shelf sculpted in aluminum and commissioned by Ugo Alfano’s Casati Gallery. Jonathan’s designs have been viewed in numerous exhibitions including New York’s ICFF, and with Casati at Paris’ Pavillon des Arts et du Design, Design Miami, Design Art London and Milan’s Salone del Mobile.

Chevron

Most of you may associate the word chevron with the Chevron Oil and Gas Company. However, it was originally used in military and heraldry design.  It’s popular among mid-century design and is great for adding a bold statement to any room. This zig zag pattern may seem funky but it can look sophisticated. Just use white or black in place of a second color and you have a clean design look! I recently purchased a chevron rug from Overstock.com and I love it! I now want chevron all over my house!

Check out this free Chevron pattern from Design Sponge.  Here are some other great chevron items that I found!

If you love it as much as I do you can purchase chevron fabric here.
