Holiday Craft Fairs

Big craft fairs start taking applications early for their big holiday shows. I went to a workshop and one of the things I learned was that you have to know who your customer is. I’ve sold at a lot of different art fairs and it took me awhile to figure out why I sold well at some and not others. These are some great craft fairs in my region that fit my type of customer. I’ve applied to some of these and I encourage you to check out these great shows and consider applying yourselves!

Culbertson Mansion

Culbertson Mansion is a historic Victorian museum located in downtown New Albany. My friend Rachel and I attended a vintage bicycle parade a few weeks ago and one of the stops along the way was the Culbertson Mansion.  We didn’t get to go inside the museum but we did have the opportunity to walk along the grounds. We discovered some sculptures and had a peek into some of the windows. I’m planning to go back soon and have a look around inside because I’m sure it’s gorgeous. They also do ghost tours which would be a fun October activity.

Discovering all of these historical treasures in New Albany has really helped me appreciate the town more and slowly I’m becoming more adjusted to living across the river from Louisville.

Floyd Street Stock Exchange

In January, I found a link on my Facebook newsfeed about an auction in Louisville and it caught my eye. Mostly because there was a mannequin for sale and I’ve been trying to get my hands on one for years. My husband and I decided to attend just to see what it was all about and it turned out to be one the funnest date nights we’ve ever had!

The Floyd Street Stock Exchange is a monthly auction held on the first Thursday of every month. Started in the winter of 2012, the auction continues to grow in popularity and is a great resource for anything vintage or design. You can find anything from architectural salvage to curiosities and home accessories. The auction is hosted by Blue Ocean Traders, a trade only wholesale source company specializing in antiques and reproductions.

purple trunkThe auction reminded me of the TV show American Pickers.  Large antique metal signs lined one wall while mid-century furniture lay around the room. I spied a set of antique medicinal bottles as well as vintage artwork. There was even a gold leafed Victorian couch with velvet seats. The auction had hundreds of items for sale. A loud boisterous man called out the items so fast it was hard to understand what he was saying at first. Once the auction got started things began moving quickly and it took us awhile to figure out what was going on. Everyone was so friendly though and helped us learn the rules and etiquette.

My husband and I went for the mannequin which we purchased but also came home with three trunks (pictured here), an ottoman, pillows, and a door knocker. We got a great deal on all of our items! I saw the exact same trunk that I purchased for $25 in a store priced at $300.

The auctions begin with a preview and registration at 5PM and last for hours. Everything in the room is up for grabs and there’s even free beer, wine and snacks. The auction lasts for hours and some of the best deals are had at the very end.

The next auction is this Thursday April 4. You never know what you’ll find so make sure to follow the Floyd Street Stock Exchange on Facebook and visit their website.

Crafting with DIY Louisville

Last night I finally had the chance to attend a DIY Louisville meet-up.  I’ve been wanting to go for awhile now and I’m glad I did. It was a lot of fun and I met a bunch of great ladies! DIY Louisville has monthly meet-ups. Follow them on Facebook so that you can find out about future meet-ups and follow their blog!

This month’s craft group was bring your own project so I brought materials to make a headband display for my work.  I had a styrofoam head from a craft store and I decoupaged old book pages onto it for a vintage look.

Matryoshka Dolls

My parents are constantly traveling around the world and recently my father came back from Russia with gifts! I received a gift of Russian chocolates, tea, coffee and of course… Matryoshka dolls! Matryoshka or Russian Nesting Dolls refer to a set of wooden figures of decreasing size placed one inside the other. They’re beautiful and a fun way to add some color to your home.

Poppytalk Handmade

Poppytalk Handmade is an online curated marketplace offering some of the best designs worldwide.  Exhibitions change each month consistently offering fresh new designs. Any artist may submit their work to be included and it’s worth the try because Poppytalk receives traffic of approximately 1 million pageloads a month!

Poppytalk Handmade promotes each chosen artist on the front page and also offers them a separate page where they may include a biography and photographs of their work. Poppytalk sends consumers directly to the artist’s online shop so that the sellers may buy directly from the artist.

The new exhibition launches on June 4 so hurry up and check out these current items before they disappear! Here are a few of my favorites.
